The first DVD in the new CRYPT OF HORROR live-action DVD series, hosted by LON MADNIGHT, who presides over THREE HOURS of terror, including RETURN OF DRACULA, the rare 1958 feature starring Francis Lederer; BLACK SUNDAY, Mario Bava's eerie 1961 classic starring Barbatra Steele, and...CARNAGE OF DRACULA, a NEVER-PREVIOUSLY-RELEASED 1964 COLOR film written, produced & directed by BILL BLACK!!! All this plus a horror movie trailer collection and other great features!! CARNAGE OF DRACULA, Bill Black's great "lost" horror opus of his film school days of the mid-1960's features Michael Lynn as Count Dracula, played against the modern world (of the 1960's, anyway) as a scientist labors to "cure" the Count of the terrible "disease" that drives him to feed off the blood of humans. When the treatment takes too long, the Count reverts to his true age, and must make a meal of the doctor to regain his vitality. Devotes of moody, Gothic horror genre pieces should find this film a winner. CARNAGE OF DRACULA, in COLOR, is released here on this disc for the first time ANYWHERE. One of the disc's co-features; RETURN OF DRACULA was the FIRST Dracula film of the 1950's; in fact THE first major-release picture to cover the Dracula legend after the heyday of Bela Lugosi era. Star Francis Lederer, a handsome leading man of the 1930's, gives an offbeat portrayal of the celebrated Count, and setting his vampiric antics against the "modern" USA of Eisenhower-era California gives this film an unusual feel. Though shot entirely in black & white, the film's heart-staking climax features splashes of RED color for shock effect. The third act of this disc's superb triple-feature is Mario Bava's BLACK SUNDAY. This film launched the career of actress Barbara Steele as a major star of the macabre cinema. In this version, with American voice & music track, composer Les Baxter's stirring score adds immensley to the overal atmosphere of this Gothic vampire thriller. Horror host LON MADNIGHT (and his cohorts LUNA & SPOOKY SAM ) is great fun in the tradition of the superb late-night fright movie hosts of the 1950's & '60's; but his commentary & antics serve only as wrapper pieces before & after the movies, and do not interrupt the films in any way. All vintage film herin has been digitally remastered, for the highest-quality sound & picture possible. This is a regions-free, all-ages , unrated live-action DVD movie presentation, with some portions shot in black & white, and some on color in NTSC format, recorded on two DVD-R discs. It should play on any standard DVD player, and runs over 180 minutes in total.
