For many years, legend had it that Victor Fox was an accountant at DC Comics at the time that SUPERMAN hit the comic book world like an atom bomb, and quit to get in on the goldmine by starting his OWN company, Fox Features Publications. While contemporary researchers seem to have disproven that theory, what IS factual is that Fox WAS one of the first comic book publishers to try to jump whole-hog onto the costumed superhero bandwagon. When Fox’s blatant SUPERMAN imitation WONDER MAN was sued out of the lead spot in Wonder World Comics, Fox quickly followed up with a trio of other anthology titles- Weird Comics, Fantastic Comics and Mystery Men, each one carrying a healthy dose of what they called “long underwear characters” at the time. This great collection of all-Fox fun showcases stars from all four books. The BLUE BEEETLE is probably the companies’ best-remembered character, and this issue will feature not one but TWO BB stories; one from the companies’ early days, as drawn by Larry Antoinette, and a second from the late-1940’s Fox “Good Girl Art” period, drawn by future EC great Jack Kamen. Another Fox heavy-hitter was legendary strong-man SAMSON. We’ll also have a pair of his adventures, both illustrated by the underrated Al Carreno. The GREEN MASK will be represented as well, with a story originally run in Mystery Men #13. Whacked-out science fiction was also a Fox staple, so we’ll include a pair of heroes that meld the hero motif to s-f; STARDUST the SUPER-WIZARD and REX DEXTER, as drawn by a pair of the Golden Age’s wildest stylists, Fletcher Hanks and Dick Briefer, respectively. We may throw in SPACE SMITH just for fun, too. Female super-types were NOT commom in the Fox books, but we found two for this volume- MARGA the PANTHER WOMAN and the anti-heroic SORCERESS of ZOOM, both originally seen in Weird Comics. Oddwad Fox “specialist” heroes will be in attendance as well, including the underwater NAVY JONES, mad scientist Dr. MORTAL by Bert Whitman, period paladin The GOLDEN KNIGHT (well-rendered by the enigmatic “Grieg Chapian”), super-spy D-13 (with art and story by Bob Powell) and Klaus Nordling’s two-fisted LT. DRAKE. And we CAN’T have an issue of MEN of MYSTERY without debuting at least a couple of NEVER before reprinted heroes, so we’ll have a trio of them from the pages of the Fox books this go-around. Originally found in Wonder World, we’ll have The BLACK LION, as drawn by Chuck Winter; from V-Man Comics it’ll be The BANSHEE, as illoed by a young Warren King, and one-time Blue Beetle Comics back-up, “DYNAMITE” THOR!! You’ve never seen THESE three heroes before, and chances are you may never see them again. All totaled, it’s 140 pages of full-story vintage reprints in black and white inside a full-color cover, saddle stitched for $29.95. Men of Mystery #98, coming from AC Comics in September 2015.
