When AC Comics first started Men of Mystery nearly twenty years ago, it was intended as an anthology “sampler”, featuring examples of the best and most interesting Golden Age heroes and concepts from a variety of defunct publishers. In recent years, we’ve gone to a large number of “themed” issues, focusing on the output of a single company, or a single genre or subject. We do like to keep the occasional “variety” issue coming, though- and that’s what Men of Mystery #99 will be, containing items of interest from at least SEVEN different vintage publishing houses, including Lev Gleason, Hillman, Spark, Fawcett, Dell and Ajax-Farrell. Comic book superstar characters of the era that will take center stage this go-around will include Lev Gleason’s original DAREDEVIL in a 17-page saga written and drawn by Charles Biro; AIRBOY (by Fred Kida) from Airboy Volume 4, #1, 1947; a previously-unseen example the 1950’s version of The FLAME; the great Joe Kubert’s take on CRIMEBUSTER, Chuck Chandler (from Boy Comics #113); SHOCK GIBSON illustrated by the Glanzman brothers- Lew and Sam; CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT drawn by Leonard Frank, and The CLAW by Bob Q. Siege. Popular favorites returning in never-previously-reprinted stories include Frank Thomas’ The OWL (from Popular #78), The HEAP by Arthur Peddy; SPIRIT of ’76 with art by Bob Powell, and an Arturo Cazeneuve-drawn episode of The ZEBRA. And vintage heroes making their FIRST APPEARANCE EVER in MOM this issue include Jerry Robinson’s ATOMAN; the very offbeat FIREATER, illustrated by Artie Saaf from Choice Comics; IRON ACE, Great Comics “star” The GREAT ZARRO, and a contemporary hero (well, in the 1940’s, anyway) know as ROBIN HOOD, from Green Hornet #10. That’s 140 full pages of classic costumed heroes from the Golden Age in crisp, clear back and white with color covers. Standard comic book size and saddle-stitched for $29.95. Men of Mystery #99, coming from AC Comics in January, 2016. Don’t miss it.
